Silas Otieno
Context
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many livelihoods were disrupted. Silas, from Siaya County, was among them. As the country locked down and job opportunities became scarce, Silas turned to the one thing he could control: the soil beneath his feet. He adopted a more sustainable approach to water his crops .
Aspiration
With a passion for farming but limited resources, Silas aspired to turn his small piece of land into a reliable source of income. He planted kale (sukuma wiki) as his Cash crop and today his community thrives as it is now a sustainable income generating venture and is looking to be one of the major Kale supplier in Nyanza province
Story
Silas came across Irrihub on social media and was immediately drawn to their smart irrigation solutions and Legend project subsidy .After reaching out he was able to purchase a drip irrigation kit and a water tank. That decision marked the beginning of his farming transformation.
With the drip kit in place, Silas no longer had to rely on unpredictable rainfall or spend hours watering his crops by flood irrigation. The consistent yet precise water supply allowed him to farm kale all year round, regardless of the season.
Outcomes
Today, Silas is thriving. His kale farm is lush, productive, and profitable. The drip system not only saved him time but also significantly increased his yields and reduced water wastage.
What began as a survival move during the pandemic has grown into a dependable agribusiness. Silas now serves as an inspiration to other youth and community members in Siaya proving that with the right tools, smart farming is not only possible, but profitable.
