Shadrack, a recent university graduate Gen z from Nyatike Kenya, ventured into farming as a side hustle while seeking employment. He relied on traditional methods, manually watering his crops which were mostly onions and tomatoes with a watering can, which was labor-intensive and inefficient. This approach limited his farm’s productivity and scalability.​

Despite the challenges, Shadrack aspired to transform his small-scale farming into a sustainable, full-time business. He envisioned a modern farm that utilized efficient irrigation techniques to maximize yields and income.​

Shadrack’s turning point came when learned about the Legend Project, a collaboration between Irri-Hub and MEDA aimed at supporting smallholder farmers in Western Kenya. Through the project, Shadrack received:​

With these resources, Shadrack revamped his farming approach, leading to healthier crops and increased productivity.​

Today, Shadrack’s farm stands as a testament to the positive impact of embracing modern agricultural solutions. His yields have improved significantly, providing a steady income and food security for his family. Moreover, his success story has inspired neighboring farmers to explore and adopt similar practices, fostering a community-wide shift towards sustainable farming aside from mining and fishing that are very common in his area
