Rael Ojwaya
Context
Rael Ojwaya, a retired teacher from Migori County, turned to small-scale farming after retirement. She had a passion for growing vegetables but struggled with poor harvests due to water shortages and lack of irrigation knowledge.
Without a proper system, she relied on carrying heavy buckets of water — a tiring and unsustainable method. Her crops would dry up during the hot season, and she couldn’t plant regularly. Though she had the land and determination, she lacked the tools to succeed.
Like many retired farmers in Kenya, Rael wanted a better way to grow food and earn income — but she needed support to make it happen.
Aspiration
Rael didn’t want to slow down after retirement. She wanted to stay active, contribute to her community, and generate income for herself and her grandchildren.
Her dream? To run a small vegetable farm where she could grow healthy crops, sell to local markets, and inspire other women to do the same.
But she lacked the tools, water access, and technical knowledge. Traditional farming methods weren’t yielding results — and she was on the verge of giving up.
Story
That’s when Rael discovered the Legend Project — a collaboration between Irri-Hub and MEDA aimed at empowering smallholder farmers in Western Kenya with subsidized irrigation equipment, training, and ongoing support.
Rael received subsidized
drip irrigation kit
ALV (African leafy vegetables) seedlings
A 2500 litre tank
Training in climate-smart farming and efficient water use
Access to agronomists and field support
With these tools, Rael transformed her land into a lush, productive space growing potatoes, cassava , soya beans, sukuma wiki, and onions. She no longer worried about water shortages or poor yields. Her crops thrived even during the dry season.
“This project helped me start over — not just as a farmer, but as a provider,” Rael says. “Now, I wake up with purpose and pride.”
Outcomes
Today, Rael is one of the most successful female farmers in her village. Her farm feeds her family, earns her consistent income, and has inspired other retired women and youth to consider agriculture.
She has become a mentor, offering advice on drip irrigation, and how to farm sustainably with limited resources.
Her success story shows how retirees, especially women, can thrive in farming with the right support — and how the Legend Project by Irri-Hub and MEDA is creating real change in rural Kenya
